KAS VAN VLIET (1994 - PRESENT)
Camera artist — because that sounds better than photographer.
After being born in the identity-challenged city of Almere and blossoming in Eindhoven, Kas began his journey at the School of Journalism in Utrecht. While the post-truth society sprouted from our Astroturf frontyards, he learned what objectivity supposedly means – or at least what we think it meant — so he could later toss it overboard.
Although Kas once started out capturing reality during a brief career in photojournalism, he now devotes his time to orchestrating alternative realities — the kind that sometimes say more about our times than truth ever could. He turned his back on the so-called ‘real’ and found his calling in transforming images into dystopian screenshots from a video game no one wants to play, but everybody has to.
That uneasy feeling comes to life in his “photo-paintings” — or, more accurately: reality fed through a blender and mysteriously reborn as art. His series NEO EHV, depicting Eindhoven as Blade Runner might have intended, has been exhibited at venues such as Pennings Foundation, Kelderman & Van Noort, and Natlab.
Kas is currently exploring new ways and styles to express his desires and anxieties more explicitly through photography — and to share his work in the same public spaces where he finds his inspiration. Outdoors.
